Meta announced that end-to-end encryption in Instagram and Messenger standards is not expected to be complete until 2023. Announced in 2019, the feature was initially scheduled for release in 2022, but the plan has been delayed a bit.
This was revealed by Antigone Davis, head of meta safety. This seems to be a response to the point that the platform or law enforcement agencies cannot detect criminal trends such as child abuse due to end-to-end encryption.
In response to this point, Davis said that even if encrypted end-to-end, unencrypted data and account information in the app could be incorporated and sensitive information could be submitted to the authorities. Moreover, it is working with external experts to develop effective solutions to combat unauthorized use. To take the time to address this issue, the release has been delayed until 2023.
After changing the company name from Facebook to Meta, the company is promoting privacy-oriented policies such as abolishing the facial recognition system, while also taking measures to consider user convenience, such as reviving the Twitter display on Instagram.
