Autofocals, developed by a research team at Stanford University in the United States, using eye tracking technology, is a prototype of glasses that allows you to focus on where you are looking.
As a person ages, the function of the lens of the eye becomes weak and it becomes difficult to concentrate in close proximity. The so-called presbyopia phenomenon occurs. In this case, you will use something like a multifocal progressive lens. However, progressive lenses have a narrow focus range. People with progressive lenses are said to have an increased risk of falling.
Autopocals was created to solve this problem. It mimics the action of the human eye, i.e. the lens, and focuses by adjusting the thickness to match the lens filled with liquid turns the gaze. In fact, as a result of having 56 people with presbyopia use a prototype, it was found to be more effective than progressive lenses when reading or doing other tasks.
However, the current prototype is the same size as a virtual reality headset, so it is difficult to carry out everyday life with it. The researchers say it may take years to change to a more energy-efficient, lightweight, and stylish size. Nevertheless, the technology reveals that it can affect the lives of billions of people in meaningful ways. Related information can be found here .
