Rekognition, a facial recognition system that Amazon is developing, is said to be able to detect fear in human expressions. Provided as part of the AWS cloud service, this feature uses artificial intelligence to predict and learn momentary emotions from facial images.
According to a recent announcement by Amazon, not only has it improved the precision of gender or age identification, but emotions can also be searched for fear in addition to happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, disgust, serenity, and mystery. Amazon explained that this facial recognition analysis feature is available for both images and videos, and the target is available to all AWS regional customers. Also, no prior knowledge of artificial intelligence is required to use this technology.
However, although technical accuracy has improved, some experts believe that there is a correlation between people’s emotions and facial expressions. It warns that it is impossible to simply read a person’s emotions with only facial expressions as similar expressions can express completely different emotions.
Amazon’s facial recognition system also raises concerns that the world will go to surveillance socialization as law enforcement agencies are included in its customers. There are also reports that Amazon is selling the system to agencies such as immigration officials and customs despite opposition from employees. The American Civil Liberties Association ACLU also announced in July that people should be able to walk freely without government surveillance. It is argued that mass surveillance systems such as Reconiton threaten freedom and pose a specific threat to communities that might be targeted in political situations.
ALCU also revealed the results of an investigation last year that 28 people were identified as arresting crimes as a result of scanning the faces of US lawmakers using Reconience. The body camera facial recognition function recently used by the California police has also raised objections to the use of facial recognition technology by legal authorities, including reports that it identified 26 California legislators as criminals.
While these groups have voiced opposition, Amazon investors have different opinions. Rather, there are reports that Amazon sold the record to ICE, perhaps one of the most controversial government agencies. It seems necessary to remember that even if the technology itself is excellent, the result can vary greatly depending on how you define it from a person’s point of view and use it.
