Self-driving truck startup TuSimple is said to have been delivering mail from Arizona. The company was also invested by freight forwarders USP and United Parcel as shareholders. The company reportedly has been transporting UPS’s luggage in the 185km delivery section connecting Phoenix and Tucson using autonomous trucks since May.
UPS acknowledged that it used two-simple autonomous trucks to deliver cargo from Arizona. In addition, at about the same time that the UPS and TwoSimple program began, the USPS also partnered with TwoSimple to launch a two-week trial operating program that transports mail between Phoenix and Dallas, a 1,610km section.
According to TwoSimple, this will reduce the average cost of transportation using a trailer truck by 30%. The announcement of a new partnership with UPS Ventures also explains that UPS is working with startups to explore new technologies and meet specific needs.
Two Simple has applied its own autonomous driving technology using nine cameras and two riders to a commercial truck company, Navistar. In addition, according to the announcement of the partnership, TwoSimple is helping UPS understand how to make it possible to drive fully autonomously with Level 4 autonomous driving, allowing it to reach specific locations. Of course, the two-simple trucks that deliver UPS cargo right now still have engineers and drivers on board, but if the UPS reaches two-simple and level 4, it will not need a driver.
