BMW restored concept car that disappeared half a century ago

BMW’s concept car, which was shown at the motor show in 1970, but has been unknown since then, was revived with modern technology. This vehicle, which may seem a little strange considering the times, was not designed by BMW, but by Italian design house Bertone, for the design proposal of the BMW mid-size coupe.

Marcello Gandini, who was the chief designer of the Bertone studio in charge of the design, is known for handling various supercars such as the Ferrari 308GT4. He says he hoped for a car that was both dynamic and somewhat controversial, while being faithful to BMW’s design language. Overall, it is a design that considers the interior space in an elegant and clean line, but it is accompanied by challenging details that reinterpret the trademark of BMW as a hexagon and square headlights covered with glass.

This concept car was exhibited at the Geneva Motor Show in 1970. I haven’t been able to tell where I was for a long time, but now only a few photos remain. BMW said it found this photo a few years ago and decided to revive the BMW Garmisch concept again. The reason is to make up for the gap missing in the BMW design company. To pay homage to Gandini, who had a great influence on modern design, and to remind him of his little-known work.

The reprint used not only craftsmanship but also modern cutting-edge technology. Based on the drawing, the structure and shape of the concept car were revived with data through 3D modeling technology. He then made a clay model and showed it in Gandini, and went through the finest steps. It is said that the exterior color was color matched based on Gandini’s memory.

It is said that such reproduction was not easy without 3D printing technology. In fact, it is said that the design of this vehicle at the time influenced the parts of the first BMW 5 Series that appeared in 1972. BMW is also releasing data for the Vision M Next 3D printer through its official website. Related information can be found here .

Through the monthly AHC PC and HowPC magazine era, he has watched 'technology age' in online IT media such as ZDNet, electronic newspaper Internet manager, editor of Consumer Journal Ivers, TechHolic publisher, and editor of Venture Square. I am curious about this market that is still full of vitality.
