Will the US introduce the largest highway law ever?

On July 29 (local time) in the United States, a group of senators from both parties introduced a new bill (America’s Transportation Infrastructure Act of 2019) aimed at overhauling or repairing highway infrastructure.

The proposal also includes the installation of electric vehicle chargers and a project to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and it is reported to cost 285 billion dollars (about 399 trillion won) over five years.

In the United States, the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 was enacted as part of a road maintenance plan in 1956 during the days of President Eisenhower. It was a national project that invested 25 billion dollars to improve the highway network over 10 years. Of course, since prices are different now and then, a simple comparison cannot be made, but it is said that this bill must be the largest highway law in history beyond the national project of 1956.

Also, Congressman John Barrasso, one of the lawmakers who submitted the bill, is getting a hot topic. He is also a negative congressman on environmental issues that demanded President Trump leave the Paris Agreement. The US media reports surprisingly that the law was initiated by the enemy of EV, as Barasso’s name was put on the project, including the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.

Of course, whether or not it will become a law officially must pass through the assembly, but as it is a large national project, it is expected that future trends will attract attention. Related information can be found here .
