Sweden’s highest peak changed, “Global warming… ”

A research team at the University of Stockholm measured the altitude of the southern peak of Mount Kebnekaise, Sweden’s highest peak so far, and confirmed that it has decreased by 24 m over the past 50 years. Accordingly, it is said that the northern shelf is now the highest peak. The highest peak has changed in recent years as glaciers have melted due to the summer heat.

The research team said that last year, Mt. Kebnekaise was feeling as if the altitude toward the northern peak was higher than the southern peak. However, due to the difficulty of accurate measurement in winter, the measurement was postponed to this summer, and in the end, the altitude of Nambong peak was 2095.6m in recent measurements, indicating that it was 1.2m lower than that of Bukbong Peak.

In addition, it is not a problem that the record has been updated, but the glaciers melt to the extent that the top of the mountain is lowered by the height of one 25m swimming pool. It is also pointed out that there is a risk that sea level rise will continue at a rate comparable to that it affects the lives of local people who depend on the supply of melted snow or that the normal height has decreased so far. There may be voices saying that we need to take serious warming measures. Related information can be found here .
