A pedestrian signal system with cameras was developed in Austria.
A signal system equipped with a camera recognizes a range of 8×5m near the signal. Among these, it is possible to recognize a person who is trying to cross the road and turn it into a green light. The post-processing process is similar to the button on a regular traffic light, but it is said to be 3-4 seconds faster than pressing the button.
This system is not very different from the method of detecting the vehicle and changing the signal, but it is meaningful in that it realizes more flexible control. For example, if you have a large number of people, you can increase the green light or quickly shorten the signal change if all people pass by before the signal changes.
Of course, there are concerns about personal information protection by attaching a camera, but taking this into account, all processing such as image recognition is carried out only in the relevant region. It means that it is not sent to the central server.
Usually, when such a system is developed, it is often only developed and finished, but it is said that it has been decided to introduce this system to Vienna by the end of 2020. Related information can be found here .
