Twitter is used by 126 million people worldwide every day. However, research has shown that the more Twitter users are affected, the worse the reading comprehension or memorization test results are.
Presented by the research team of Professor Gian Paolo Barbetta, Faculty of Economics at the Universityà Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, Italy.
Professor Barbeta received a review of the novel’I’m the late Mattia Pascalio’ by Luigi Pirandello, a Nobel Prize writer for 1,500 students attending 70 Italian high schools from 2016 to 2017. Half of the students used Twitter to conduct online discussions, citing novels, giving their opinions and commenting on others’ tweets. The other half took the form of teaching in the classroom as before. Finally, I took a test to confirm my comprehension.
As a result, the group who used the tweeter was generally negatively affected, and the test average score decreased by 25-40% of the standard deviation. Students with excellent grades had a remarkable tendency to decline. Professor Barbeta pointed out that it was a misunderstanding that he thought that tweeting about the contents of the book could be absorbed by retweeting the tweet about the contents of the book about the decline of the student using Twitter. .
Initially, Professor Barbeta thought that the use of Twitter in this study would bring positive results. However, he commented that although more research is needed to conclude on Twitter’s adverse effects, we should be cautious about how to use social media.
According to Professor Liu Ziming of San Jose State University, in a 2016 study, the increasing opportunities to read electronic documents on PC monitors or smartphone screens have led to changes in reading behavior, reducing the time spent reading carefully or focusing on reading. They pointed out that constant attention is being reduced. Related information can be found here .
