Why Netflix tracks user physical activity

Netflix is collecting a lot of data from users. However, it was discovered that Netflix is collecting physical activity data, such as walking, running, or riding a train, through smartphones, targeting some Android users.

The Netflix app for Android adds a screen asking permission to connect to physical activity. Netflix is said to be conducted as part of a test to improve Netflix playback quality while users are on the go. This feature is only being tested on some accounts, and there are no plans to expand it to more accounts.

Netflix is expected to use the new operating system Android Q update to allow app developers to access sensor data and detect walking, or to categorize physical activity, such as walking or moving on bicycles or rides, as described on the developer page. Of course, you can’t watch Netflix on your smartphone while walking the streets. It can be said that Netflix is seeking to improve playback quality for people who commute by train or car.

Netflix previously announced a DIY project called Make It. It was a project that paused the video being watched when the exercise was stopped, or incorporated personal trainers and contents in a unique form. Given that so many people watch videos on a gym treadmill, it might not be a ridiculous idea for Netflix to do this on a smartphone. Related information can be found here .
