Candy (Candle) is a smart home system specialized in personal information protection.
Smart home devices use IoT and AI assistants to control surveillance cameras and home appliances. IT companies such as Google and Amazon directly provide smart home devices. Recently, however, there have been reports that Microsoft, Google, and Amazon employees have discovered that they are checking the contents by recording audio or video collected by smart home devices.
The smart home device to respond to these concerns is Kandy. Candy uses Mozilla’s WebThings Gateway, an open source software for controlling IoT devices. IoT devices always transmit data to the cloud while connected to Wi-Fi. However, Candy remains physically disconnected from the network except when necessary, and does not send data collected outside of the cloud without using the cloud.
Candy is in the state of being disclosed as a concept, so at this stage, you have to assemble the equipment and sensors yourself. Candy can add various sensors such as a smart remote control, timer, carbon dioxide concentration meter, electricity meter, dust sensor, soil moisture meter for houseplants, and smart thermometer or hygrometer. The official site introduces the necessary parts for each candy function, how to assemble parts and install software in detail.
Candy can also notify you of fake data. Using this function, for example, even if the concentration of carbon dioxide is high, it can be said to be low, and it is possible to smoke without the dust sensor detecting it. On the official page, for example, when a child who has become a junior high school student is handed over control of the sensor in his room, it is possible to secretly invite a friend to his room without being noticed by parents, or to prevent the situation from being monitored by parents at all times, and to protect the child’s privacy. It is indicated that it is possible.
The basic control of Candy is by the Raspberry Pi 4B, and there is no need for soldering or anything like soldering each time you add a feature. The official page says that it is looking for a company that will commercialize it. Related information can be found here .
