Twitter promotes development of open standards for decentralized social media

Twitter CEO Jack Dorothy announced on December 11 that it is investing to develop open standards for decentralized social media. He added that in the future, it aims to make Twitter an open standard client.

He said that Twitter was very open in its infancy and could become a decentralized Internet standard such as an email protocol, but that Twitter has increasingly established a centralized solution. For example, Twitter sets terms and conditions, and it adopts a centralized solution that handles all issues such as malicious posts and fake news posts under the management of Twitter. However, Jack Dossey pointed out that trying to deploy the solution globally puts an undue burden on employees.

He added that the value demanded by social media is shifting from hosting and deleting content to an algorithm that encourages human attention. Twitter Timeline, for example, does not simply list tweets from followers in chronological order, but automatically selects and displays tweets first. There was a lot of criticism for this structure, and in September 2018, Twitter switched to allowing users to display timelines according to their preferences.

However, since such a selection algorithm is proprietary to Twitter operated by itself, a user using Twitter cannot change the algorithm itself to another algorithm or build a new one. In addition, in the existing social media, not healthy information and dialogue, but contents and dialogue that can cause debate and anger are also a problem. He said that with the advent of decentralized Internet technologies such as block chains, the possibility and expectations of decentralized Internet feasibility are increasing.

Jack Dorsey funded a small independent team, bluesky, to develop an open standard for decentralized social media, and later set a goal for Twitter to become a customer of the standard. Blue Sky is a team formed by Twitter CTO (Parag Agrawal).

An example of decentralized social media is Mastodon, which was launched in 2016. As an open source platform, it was developed by GitHub, so it can be said that it is a decentralized social media open platform that Jack City is aiming for. Some users even point out whether they have taken out the old ones like a wheel. However, Mastodon said that it was announcing the establishment of a protocol that allows Twitter to control itself as Google controls Android. Related information can be found here.

Through the monthly AHC PC and HowPC magazine era, he has watched 'technology age' in online IT media such as ZDNet, electronic newspaper Internet manager, editor of Consumer Journal Ivers, TechHolic publisher, and editor of Venture Square. I am curious about this market that is still full of vitality.
