An autonomous EV charging robot that comes to charge directly

German car brand Volkswagen has further refined the concept of an autonomous electric vehicle automatic charging robot that was announced in 2017.

The new concept is divided into a towing robot equipped with an arm and various sensors, and a battery that charges an electric vehicle. The robot operates the parked electric vehicle with mobile apps, automobiles, and other devices and wireless communication standard V2X technology, and the robot pulls the battery to the electric vehicle that requested charging, and then connects the battery to the charging connector. The battery can be quickly charged up to 50kW DC and has a capacity of 25kWh per unit.

When the rechargeable battery is not in use, it can be connected to an energy storage device, i.e., a battery charging facility, and it is always full to wait for the electric vehicle to arrive. In addition, by installing expensive sensors only on the robot, the overall cost was reduced.

Existing electric vehicle charging stations were able to charge the next vehicle only by removing the charged electric vehicle, but with this concept, the space where the robot can travel to charge the charging device to the other side. So, electric vehicles in all parking lots as long as there is enough to share with the human walkway. There is an advantage that it can respond to. Related information can be found here .
