The Bosch Virtual Visor, announced by Bosch, aims to change the sun visor, which has been far from innovation for more than a century. To change the visor, which was focused on the role of the driver blocking only the sun from the view.
Until now, all sun visors were wrapped in cloth. However, Bosch’s virtual visor has an LCD panel. The panel works in conjunction with a camera facing the driver’s face, processes the image using self-learning AI, and recognizes facial features such as nose, mouth, and most important eyes. This camera system recognizes the shadows cast on the driver’s eyes and darkens only the areas of the LCD visor that are likely to be dazzling by the strong sunlight. The darkening part always changes according to the movement of the car and the driver, but the other part is transparent so it does not interfere with the road ahead and the view of other vehicles.
It is said that this product was developed by three powertrain engineers using their spare time. It was started by recovering parts from the obsolete PC monitor. Of course, we don’t know when this feature will appear as a new option. For practical application, it may be necessary to test for fragile LCD panels, etc. through automotive tests.
