“The 6GHz band standard name is Wi-Fi 6E”

The Wi-Fi Alliance named the standard Wi-Fi 6E (Wi-Fi 6E), including the new frequency band 6GHz, which will be added to the Wi-Fi standard.

Wi-Fi 6E stands for Extended. It means that the 6GHz band was also added by expanding the current Wi-Fi standard. Currently, the Wi-Fi standard uses two frequency bands, a 2.4GHz band and a 5GHz band. Wi-Fi 6E can realize stable communication by adding 6GHz band to it.

In addition to the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands that are currently deployed in the Wi-Fi 6 standard, Wi-Fi 6E can use 14 additional 80MHz and seven 160MHz in the 6GHz band. In other words, because the amount of communication that can be accommodated increases, communication congestion is eliminated and the speed is increased.

The 6 of Wi-Fi 6E refers to the 6th generation. It is not called Wi-Fi 6E because it is in the 6GHz band. A standard called Wi-Fi 6 already exists, and Wi-Fi 6E can be said to be this extension. In addition, Wi-Fi 6 has an IEEE standard name called IEEE 802.11ax as an IEEE standard, but since 6GHz is added to the frequencies supported by this IEEE 802.11ax, the IEEE standard name for Wi-Fi 6 is IEEE 802.11ax.

Of course, before Wi-Fi 6E can actually be used, governmental support for managing radio resources and Wi-Fi 6E sales must proceed. In the US, Wi-Fi 6 commercial products are expected to appear by this year. The Wi-Fi Alliance is urging governments to open the 6GHz band, and discussions on the use of the 6GHz band are underway in Europe.

Meanwhile, for products supporting Wi-Fi 6E, Broadcom has announced a Wi-Fi 6E supporting chip during CES 2020. In order to actually communicate, a support modem that can be used on the device side such as a home Wi-Fi router with a chip and a smartphone is required, but this is expected to appear sooner or later.

The Wi-Fi Alliance said it would not set a dedicated logo on Wi-Fi 6E, and Wi-Fi routers that support Wi-Fi 6E standards will also be sold with the Wi-Fi 6 logo. Related information can be found here .

I am curious about this market that is still full of vitality.
