1 year and 8 months of GDPR entry into force… Total fine of 140 billion

About one year and eight months have passed since the GDPR of the privacy regulation in Europe came into effect in May 2018. There have been many talks about imposing sanctions for violations of the GDPR, but DLA Piper, a global law firm, drew attention by revealing fine statistics through a report.

According to this, more than 160,000 data breaches have been reported since the introduction of the GDPR. As for the number of reports, the Netherlands, Germany and the UK are the top three, with more than 100,000 cases in these three countries alone. In addition, until January 27, 2019, there were 247 notifications of violations per day for the first eight months, but it is reported that there is an increasing trend to 278 cases per day for one year in 2019.

In addition, the number of reported data breaches per 100,000 people, the Netherlands recorded the highest at 147.2, and the UK and Germany ranked 13th and 11th respectively. On the other hand, in Italy, with a population of 62 million, there were 1,886 cases, only 3 cases per 100,000 people, the lowest. It can be said that cultural differences are also appearing in personal information.

For one year and eight months, a total fine of 14 million euros was imposed, and the maximum amount for individual cases is 50 million euros imposed on Google by France. In addition, UK regulators announced in July 2019 that they would be fined £180 million for British Airways’ customer data breach, but at the time of the report, they were not yet finalized, but were not counted. Similarly, in December 2019, France announced that it would impose a fine of 150 million euros on Google, but that was not included in the count.

The GDPR regulation allows sanctions to be imposed on a target company’s global sales of 2% and in some cases 4%. Therefore, the higher the sales, the higher the sanction amount. In addition, DLA Piper said that the method of calculating fines differs according to regulations, and that more fines and appeals are expected in the coming years.
