71% of Americans are afraid of autonomous driving

According to the results of the American Automobile Association AAA survey, it seems that Americans feel more scared than technology has made it more comfortable to ride an autonomous car.

According to the survey, 63% of respondents in 2017 said they were scared, but in 2019, 71% said they were afraid of self-driving vehicles. AAA analyzes that there is a clear reason for being afraid of autonomous vehicles. This is the recent fatal accident caused by autonomous vehicles.

In March of last year, in Arizona, an Uber car crashed while driving an autonomous vehicle, and a woman died. In California the same month, a male driver who was driving autonomously through Tesla’s autopilot died in an accident. It is said that the fear of autonomous driving is increasing due to such deaths.

AAA officials said that autonomous driving technology is evolving, and that if there is an opportunity to access autonomous vehicle technology, consumers will be able to open their minds and eliminate any doubts.

In addition, 53% of respondents in this survey said that it is okay to ride an autonomous vehicle that operates at low speeds in theme parks or airports. In addition, 44% said it was okay to use autonomous vehicles for food delivery or luggage delivery.

Interestingly, even before this survey, there was a tendency to start to feel stable when riding in an autonomous vehicle, but in a survey conducted in the first half of 2017, 78% said they felt fear. In the second half of the year, it fell to 63% again, but this year, the fear has increased significantly. The AAA also noted that 55% of Americans believe that most of the vehicles driving on the street will be autonomous vehicles by 2029.

In addition, as more and more drivers understand the advantages and limitations of the current autonomous driving technology, you can be prepared to accept when fully autonomous vehicles appear in the future and actually get on board. Right now, three out of four people are afraid to ride self-driving vehicles, but before the traffic trends themselves change, they must prepare their minds first. More than 37,000 people die in traffic accidents each year in the United States alone. Most of the deaths from these accidents are now caused by vehicles.

There is a tendency to demand perfection for self-driving, but so far, there are 2-3 deaths a year caused by self-driving vehicles. Drunken driving, misjudgment, or side-by-side driving can be more dangerous, but the reason may be that you are still more afraid of leaving it to the machine.
