China’s air pollution damages solar power generation

China has long suffered from air pollution problems. In the past, bottles of clean air were sold on fire or the world’s largest air purifiers were built. Although the air pollution problem in China has been a problem for a long time, a research report has revealed that the potential power generation by solar power is decreasing by an average of 13% due to this effect.

Fossil fuels such as oil and coal are limited in quantity and adversely affect the environment. Therefore, investment in new and renewable energy such as solar power generation or wind power generation is active. According to the report, air pollution caused by coal used in China blocks sunlight and significantly reduces solar power generation efficiency.

As of 2017, China is the country with the largest number of new solar panel installations for solar power generation in the world, and that number is half of the new panels made in the world. As a result, the capacity of solar power generation facilities in China for the eight years from 2010 to 2017 has soared from less than 1GW to 130GW, and is expected to reach 400GW by 2030.

However, according to a recently published study that compiled records of work love measurements in China from the late 1950s, in China, where the amount of insolation remained steady until 2005, there was a clear trend of decline thereafter. Air pollution from coal-fired thermal power plants or factories appears to be the cause.

The research team at the University of Zurich, who announced the results, analyzed how much power generation was lost in solar power plants in China due to the decrease in insolation caused by air pollution based on data compiled from the record of insolation measurements in China from the late 1950s.

The research team analyzed the data from the 1960s to 2015 and found that when all the periods were combined, the potential generation of solar power generation decreased by an average of 13% due to air pollution. The utilization rate of solar power generation panel facilities is decreasing year by year and is decreasing from 16.2% to 14.2%.

However, the effects of air pollution vary by region. In the five provinces that are most affected, potential power generation is reduced by 20-28%. It includes the industrial zone in eastern China, which has a great influence, as well as the western highlands.

According to research, if China can clean the atmosphere to the level of the 1950s, solar power generation facilities as of 2016 could produce 14TWh of electricity. When air pollution in China is eliminated by 2030, solar power generation will increase to 70TWh per year. The research team points out that as of 2019, it is $0.14 per kWh, but as of 2016, if the air is clean, it will be possible to generate $1.9 billion worth of electricity in addition to the actual power generation by solar power generation. In addition, by 2030, the price per 1 kWh will be $0.09, but the value of clean air will increase, and it is said that it could produce 6 billion dollars worth of power generation annually.

Between 2005 and 2017, as the electrical efficiency of solar power has improved, the amount of power generation has increased by about 10%. Therefore, it is analyzed that if air quality is improved to the level of the 1950s, much more effects can be brought to China. Related information can be found here .
