China’s TCL ends manufacturing and sales of BlackBerry smartphones

China’s TCL Communications, which produces BlackBerry brand smartphones, announced that it will end manufacturing and sales of BlackBerry smartphones at the end of August 2020.

Blackberry completed its own smartphone development and production in 2016, and now has online security as its core business. Meanwhile, BlackBerry smartphones have been manufactured and sold by TCL Communications with the permission of BlackBerry since 2016. In this system, some models such as the BlackBerry KEYone, an Android smartphone with a keyboard, have been introduced.

However, TCL Communications announced that it would withdraw from the manufacture and sale of BlackBerry smartphones, saying that the license agreement would end on August 31. However, support or warranty for products that have already been sold will be carried out by TCL Communications until August 31, 2022, two years later.

Although BlackBerry did not clearly disclose its future plans for the smartphone business, it may be difficult to think that it will continue to release BlackBerry startups, given that it separated its former core business to focus on software and security.

I am curious about this market that is still full of vitality.
