3D image posts on Facebook can now be used on a single camera smartphone. It is possible to convert more pictures from 2D to 3D by analyzing pictures using machine learning. Not only photos taken in the future, but also old photos can be processed into 3D.
Facebook 3D photos were first introduced in October 2018. Because depth information is used, it had to be used in portrait mode on a dual camera terminal. Initially, it was limited to terminals equipped with dual cameras after iPhone 7, but in August 2019, it was expanded to some Android terminals.
The number of models used will increase by using AI, but it is not possible to use it on all terminals. The list of supported devices has not been revealed, but according to Facebook, it can be used on the latest intermediate or higher Android devices.
Facebook is conducting research with plans to apply this feature to videos. Depth measurement is expected to be used for depth measurement and spatial inference in real-time applications such as augmented reality if neural network performance improves. Related information can be found here .
