Worldwide app sales in the first half of 2020, “Corona 19 demand surge”

According to the results of the Sensor Tower survey, the amount spent by consumers for installing mobile apps or apps in the first half of 2020 increased significantly due to the impact of Corona 19. In the first half, consumers spent $50.1 billion on the Apple App Store and Google Play. This is a 23.4% increase over the same period last year. For reference, the growth rate in the first half of 2019 increased by 20% compared to the same period in 2018. In addition, in the first half of 2020, the initial app installation increased 26.1% from the same period last year, and the number of downloads reached 71.5 billion.

Of these downloads, the Apple App Store accounted for 18.3 billion times, an increase of 22.8% over the previous period. On Google Play, new app installations increased 27.3% from the same period last year to 53.2 billion times.

In addition, Google Play has a large number of installations, but in terms of consumer spending, the App Store leads Google Play. In the first half of 2020, the App Store is estimated to have sold $32.8 billion for in-app purchases, subscriptions and games. This is an increase of 24.7% from $26.3 billion in the first half of 2019. Google Play was $17.3 billion, half of the App Store, up 21% from the same period last year.

Pandemic impact is focusing on applications with high sales in the first half of 2020. For example, the biggest sales were online dating app Tinder. In the first half of the year, Tinder sales are estimated to be $433 million in the App Store and Google Play combined. This number was down 19% from $532 million in the first half of 2019. It is not clear how this decline is related to changes in consumer behavior and consumer habits during the COVID-19 outbreak. People who were isolated from curfew stayed at home to keep their distance from others, but among social network apps, apps focused on online communication were prospering.

Tinder has taken advantage of the growing interest in online networking by making the Passport feature free. The free-to-charge feature makes Tinder a more social application than an app where users find singles around the world and focus on dating in the real world. However, the free passport function may have led to a decrease in Tinder sales in the first half.

The second-largest app in the first half of 2020 was YouTube, with a global estimate of $431 million. In addition, Byte Dance’s TikTok follows with $422 million. It was followed by Tencent Video at 4th and Netflix at 5th.

Meanwhile, due to the Corona 19 epidemic, consumers have downloaded a significant number of apps and games. In the first half, consumers downloaded 71.5 billion apps. This figure is an increase of 26.1% compared to the same period last year. The most downloaded app in the first half was 626 million times with TikTok. However, as the Indian government bans 59 Chinese apps, including TikTok, the position of TikTok may be completely different in the second half of the year.

WhatsApp is in second place and Zoom in third place. Zoom reflects the phenomenon that consumers have online video conferences as telecommuting progresses. In addition to WhatsApp, Facebook ranked 4th on Facebook, 5th on Instagram, and 6th on Messenger. Snapchat ranked 7th, and video app Likee ranked 8th. Lyki is similar to TikTok, but offers a variety of interface effects and filters. In addition, Netflix and YouTube were also listed in the TOP10.

Mobile game spending also surged due to the Corona 19 epidemic, and in the first half of the year, it rose 21.2% to $36.6 billion. App Store sales increased 22.7% year-on-year to $22.2 billion, and Google Play recorded $14.4 billion, up 19%.

Tencent Edition Battleground Mobile, Honor of Kings, recorded the most sales in the first half. Tencent games, including the Chinese version, sold $1.3 billion in both stores. Third-party Android stores in China are missing here. Of these, a whopping $1 billion is revenue from Honor of King.

Monster Strike followed by $632 million, Roblox, Coin Master, Candy Crush Saga, AFK Arena, Gardenscapes, Fate. /Grand Order) and Pokémon GO were listed. Among them, Roblox’s use has soared during the Corona 19 period as children can interact with friends to play with friends in the virtual world. Roblox spending in June reached $1.5 billion.

When it comes to game installation, Battleground Mobile has reached the top. Garena Free Fire, Hunter Assassin, Brain Out, and Gardenscapes were listed in TOP5.

In the mobile game market, the number of downloads in the first half of 2020 increased by 42.5% compared to the same period last year, reaching 28.5 billion installs for the first time. Of these, the number of Google Play downloads increased by 46.2% to 22.8 billion, and the number of App Store downloads increased by 29.5% to 5.7 billion.

The impact of Corona 19 in the app market is shown in numbers in the first half. An example is the growth of social gaming platforms such as Zoom and Roblox. However, as the second quarter approaches, the impact of Corona 19 becomes more pronounced. According to Sensor Tower estimates, consumer spending in the app and games sector in the second quarter increased by 11% from the first quarter and 28.8% from the same period last year to reach $26.4 billion. This is more than the 1.5% growth rate from the first to the second quarter of 2019. The number of downloads in the second quarter of this year was 37.8 billion times, up 12% from the previous quarter and 31.7% from the same period last year. Compared to the 2.5% increase in the first and second quarters of 2019, it is a rapid growth. Related information can be found here .
