Facebook strengthens digital literacy education in India

Facebook has teamed up with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), a government agency that oversees school education in India, to announce an accredited curriculum that teaches students and educators in India digital safety, healthy online activities, and augmented reality.

Both sides aim to learn through this course that middle school students can safely browse the Internet for the present and future, make informed choices, and think about their own mental health. Facebook says that this kind of education educates more than 10,000 teachers in the first stage, and teachers guide 30,000 students in the second stage. The 3-week training on augmented reality explains the basics of developing augmented reality technology and how to create augmented reality experiences using Facebook’s Spark AR Studio.

India’s Human Resources Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal said in a statement that it encourages teachers and students to apply for the program starting July 6.

Facebook partnered with telecom company Reliance Jio last year to invest $5.7 billion and launched Digital Udaan, the largest digital literacy program to date, for the first Internet users in India. . India is also the largest market for Facebook in terms of number of users.

The Guide for Building Healthy Digital Habits, developed by Instagram with the Jed Foundation and Young Leaders for Active Citizenship, is designed to help young people learn about their activities. It aims to be able to understand the social and emotional space well and have a healthy conversation.

Meanwhile, 57 Chinese apps were blocked due to an announcement by the Indian government in early July. One of these, TikTok, is fighting the market in this economy, the third largest in Asia outside of China. TikTok is used by more than 200 million users in India, most of them living in small towns or cities.
