The Wi-Fi Alliance has launched the Wi-Fi 6E certification program, an extended version of Wi-Fi 6.
Wi-Fi 6 is a wireless standard that does not drop the line speed even in a congested environment. In theory, the maximum transmission speed is 9.6 Gbps, and the radio frequency bands used for communication are 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. This is Wi-Fi 6E, an improved version of Wi-Fi 6. Wi-Fi 6E has extended the radio frequency band to 6GHz such as 5.925~7.125GHz, and is a standard suitable for high-resolution video streaming and high-speed data communication.
Wi-Fi 6E, announced in January 2020, announced that it will start offering certification programs on January 7, 2021, exactly one year later. The Wi-Fi Alliance explained that the demand for Wi-Fi operation in the 6GHz band is increasing worldwide. Wi-Fi 6E explained that the 6GHz frequency band is available worldwide, so the benefits for consumers, device manufacturers and service providers are incalculable. He added that the Wi-Fi Alliance authentication process helps users to ensure a safe and reliable interoperable environment in Wi-Fi 6E-compliant terminals.
After the FCC of the Federal Communications Commission decided to provide a 6GHz frequency band for Wi-Fi in the United States, Korea, the UK, Europe, Chile, and the United Arab Emirates also decided to secure a 6GHz band for Wi-Fi. In addition, in countries such as Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Taiwan, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Myanmar, and Jordan, there is a movement to enable the use of the 6GHz band without a wireless license. Following this movement, the Wi-Fi Alliance launched an authentication program for Wi-Fi 6E-compatible terminal authentication.
The Wi-Fi 6E certification program guarantees device interoperability and the next generation security protocol WPA3. Market research firm IDC said that Wi-Fi 6E will be rapidly adopted in 2021, and that more than 338 million corresponding handsets will enter the market. Wi-Fi 6E handsets that support the 6GHz band by 2022 are 20 out of all Wi-Fi handset shipments. It was predicted to occupy %. Companies such as Asus, Broadcom, Intel, and Qualcomm have already announced Wi-Fi 6E products, and Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy series is also planning to support Wi-Fi 6E.
