After Trump supporters attacked the US Congress on January 6, 2021 (local time), a GitHub Jewish employee was fired after posting a sentence containing the word Nazi on an in-house Slack channel. There is criticism on the Internet over GitHub’s response.
When GitHub Jewish staff heard news that the federal parliament had been raided, they posted a sentence saying stay safe homies, Nazis are about, on an internal Slack channel. GitHub’s HR team blamed the use of the word Nazi on an in-house Slack channel and fired a Jewish employee two days after posting for poor conduct.
GitHub employees were dissatisfied with the HR team’s response to firing Jewish employees and submitted 200 signatures to management to take a strong stance against anti-Semitism and white supremacy. In addition, employees are demanding that the Jewish employee disclose the real reason for being fired.
According to reports, a Jewish employee fired from GitHub said in an interview that his family had died in the Holocaust, and he was worried about a relative or colleague living in Washington, DC, knowing that a Neo-Nazi organization was involved in the raid. He said he did.
GitHub CEO Nut Friedman said that GitHub will thoroughly investigate the situation regarding employee turnover and take appropriate action. Meanwhile, Microsoft, which acquired GitHub in 2018, has decided to temporarily suspend political donations after the congressional raid. Microsoft President Brad Smith also retweeted a statement about President Trump that he should end the confusion and make a peaceful transition of power. Related information can be found here .
