Netflix signed an exclusive contract with Sony

Netflix announced that it has obtained exclusive distribution rights for the work after the Sony Pictures Theater was released. As a result, Netflix will be able to provide the works after 2022 exclusively for 18 months after they are released. This right competed with multiple delivery services, but Netflix won the $1 billion offer over four years.

It is not yet clear how long the Sony movie will be seen on Netflix after its release, given the impact of Corona 19. Nevertheless, if dozens of major works per year are only provided as a single streaming service after being released, Netflix can expect it to motivate potential customers to sign up. Netflix has also raised concerns from shareholders due to content deterioration, such as the loss of Marvel or Pixar works to Disney+ and popular dramas such as Friends to HBO.

The contract will also grant exclusive rights to works that Sony has decided to transfer immediately after skipping the theater. Currently, more and more theaters have resumed screenings, but cases of skipping theaters and releasing Netflix may continue to increase in the future.

This contract can be said to be an advantage in that even for Sony, which does not have its own streaming service, Netflix can be used as a source of revenue for works after the release ends. On the other hand, Universal and Fox are also known to be nearing the end of their exclusive contracts with HBO and are considering a streaming service that will release the end of the theater.
