
Drinks such as caffeine-free coffee and tea are welcome for health-oriented people, but when working or studying, caffeine drinks are sometimes enjoyed as a concentration enhancer. This can be extreme, but a research team at the University of Basel in Switzerland reports that people who consume caffeine regularly change the brain structure.
Studies have shown that regular consumption of caffeine alters brain gray matter, reducing its density. In the experiment, 20 subjects were divided into 2 groups of 10 subjects each, and tablets were administered twice a day. The pills given are caffeine in one group and caffeine-free in the other.
As a result of comparing the results of the head examinations of the two groups after the 10-day experiment, it was reported that gray matter was observed in the group that consumed caffeine.
Logic is an important part of the central nervous system and is related to intelligence. In addition, the perceptual process and motor skills are also dominated in this area. Caffeine is a stimulant, and it has been presumed that it causes brain gray matter, which reduces sleep quality. Surprisingly, however, in the experiment, both groups said that there was no relationship between sleep and brain changes.
The researchers said that gray matter loss is not necessarily associated with decline, so other studies need to properly investigate how it responds to brain gray matter loss and causes changes in brain function. With at least logic, it is possible for the brain to function with high efficiency, covering low density. The study also found that caffeine consumption doesn’t necessarily have an adverse effect on the brain, but it revealed that daily caffeine consumption will surely change the cognitive hardware in our bodies.
In addition, gray matter loss is temporary, and the brains of the group who consumed caffeine on the 10th and had reduced logic power also showed significant regeneration if they reduced caffeine intake for some time.
