Sony Interactive Entertainment SIE and voice chat service Discord announced that they have entered into a partnership early next year to connect telecommunications services to the PlayStation Network.
SIE CEO Jim Ryan said that starting early next year, the Discord and Playstation experiences on consoles and mobiles will be more tightly tied together, making it more fun and easier to communicate with friends and groups while playing games together. It also explained that Sony’s contribution to the recent fundraising round of Discord is part of this effort. According to CEO Jim Ryan, the two companies are already working on integrating Discord and PSN.
Discord, launched in 2015, has more than 140 million monthly active users as of December 2020. Discord has a party voice chat function in addition to group chat, and is gaining high popularity as a means of communication between gamers in online games.
In March, there were reports that Microsoft, paying attention to the popularity, entered into negotiations to acquire Discord for $10 billion. However, it is revealed that Discord has stopped negotiations with Microsoft recently, as it is reported that Discord has taken its own path with the aim of turning a surplus.
Following the acquisition of the EVO (Evolution Championship Series), which runs a major fighting esports competition, Sony is beginning to focus not only on the game console itself and software, but also on enhancing the surrounding environment for enjoying gameplay.
