Announced the formation of lobbying organizations for semiconductor industries such as Google, Apple, and Amazon

On May 12, 2021, major technology companies such as Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon announced the formation of a lobbying organization, Semiconductors in America Coalition (SIAC). The purpose of SIAC is to promote policies to support the semiconductor industry. In a statement, SIAC said its mission is to strengthen the U.S. economy, national security and critical infrastructure by promoting policies that promote U.S. semiconductor manufacturing and research.

SIAC’s first goal is to secure funding provided under the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) for America Act. The bill aims to provide investment tax credits and funding, talent development, and supply chain support for US semiconductor companies. It was enacted in the Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2021, which was submitted in June 2020. SIAC explains that the bill would cover $50 billion in chip manufacturing incentives and research projects in the United States.

SIAC members are AWS, Apple, Google, Microsoft, AMD, IBM, Intel, Qualcomm, Nvidia, ARM, Samsung Electronics, TSMC, SK Hynix, Western Digital, Micron, etc. 65 members. SIAC says it is necessary to fully invest in US semiconductor manufacturing and research to secure long-term strength and resilience to the chip supply chain, even now, when other governments provide huge incentives and semiconductor shortages continue.
