Linux kernel 5.13 RC, M1 Mac officially supported

M1 chip support has been officially introduced in the recently released Linux Kernel 5.13 RC. What was confirmed by Linux’s father Linus Torvalds in his own release notes.

According to the release notes, the latest 5.13 RC kernel adds support for several ARM-based chips, including the M1. It can run Linux on the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, and 24-inch iMac with M1 chip.

Until now, it was possible to run Linux in the Parallels virtual environment on the M1 Mac, but the M1 performance cannot be maximized. However, as this native support has been officially announced, it is a step closer to full form action.

However, as not all drivers are implemented at the corresponding stage at the kernel level at this time, the function is expected to be limited for the time being. For example, GPU acceleration is not yet supported, and there seems to be no progress, such as the fact that the implementation around 3D display and video is experiencing difficulties.

RC (Release Candidate) is an abbreviation for Release Candidate. In other words, it is a test version close to the final version. The release of the full version is expected between June and July. Related information can be found here.
