Tesla FSD Feature Now Available as a Subscription

Tesla has announced that it is offering Full Self-Driving (FSD) functionality for $199 per month. Tesla has been selling the FSD feature for $10,000 so far, but now it’s going to be sold as a subscription.

Use of the Tesla FSD service requires the company’s Autopilot feature. Autopilot is a function that automatically operates the steering wheel, accelerates, and brakes in the same lane, but FSD enables advanced automation functions such as automatic parking function, automatic signal or stop signal recognition function, and even fully autonomous driving that were not available in automatic mode.

It was announced that this FSD would be offered in the form of a monthly subscription for $199. To enable the FSD function, the car FSD computer must be updated to version 3.0 or later. In addition, FSD appears to be available for $99 per month for users of the already deprecated Enhanced Autopilot.

For Tesla vehicles that do not have autopilot, you can purchase dedicated hardware for $1,500 and use the FSD function. According to the user who received the FSD function notification from Tesla, the notification includes functions that can be used in FSD, such as autopilot lane change, auto park, and automatic recognition of a Summon signal or stop signal. However, it is said that the function currently available in FSD requires active monitoring by the driver and there is also a warning sign that the vehicle is not autonomously driven.

Currently, Tesla FSD has not realized fully autonomous driving, but it is clear that Tesla is aiming to provide level 5 fully autonomous driving capabilities. Elon Musk has said several times that fully autonomous driving is feasible so far, and in his financial statements in January 2021, he also said that he is confident that vehicles with more than human reliability will be able to drive autonomously by 2021.

On the other hand, Tesla is also saying that it is not easy to realize Level 5 fully autonomous driving in 2021, so it is not known when to realize fully autonomous driving in FSD. Related information can be found here.
