The small game console Playdate announced in 2019 by Panic, well known for iOS and macOS development, will finally start pre-orders on July 29th. It costs $179 and ships to 16 countries.
Playmate is a game machine with a 400×200 black and white LCD that can play 24 games. These games are not available at the time of purchase, and you will be able to play two games at first, then two every Monday for 11 weeks thereafter.
The crank, located on the characteristic right side, is not used for decoration or anything like manual charging, it’s an analog controller. Not all games use it, but some use cranks. In addition to the main body of the game console, a dedicated cover was also released for $29, and the Playdate Stereo Dock, which is a Bluetooth speaker with a pen holder, was also announced, but this product is said to be released a little later.
The first 20,000 units will be released in the second half of 2021, and the rest will ship in 2022. When you book, you must pay in full, but you can cancel at any time and get a full refund. Related information can be found here.
