Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that the cumulative worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 exceeded 10 million units as of July 18.
The PlayStation 5 was released on November 12, 2020. Amid global semiconductor shortages and supply problems, the number surpassed 10 million units within eight months of launch. The previous generation model, the PlayStation 4, reached 10 million units on August 10, 2014, after its launch in major countries on November 15, 2013. The PlayStation 5 broke this record and became the fastest model to reach the 10 million mark.
Among the titles, Spider-Man (Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales) has sold more than 6.5 million copies since its release on November 12, Returnal has sold more than 560,000 copies since its release on April 30 of this year, and Ratchet & Crank has sold more than 6.5 million copies. After its release on June 11th, 1.1 million copies and MLB The Show 21 recorded 2 million cumulative sales and 4 million gamers.
Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, expressed his gratitude and said that the PlayStation 5 is being distributed at a faster rate than previous consoles, and that global demand continues to outstrip supply. As all industries, not just the game industry, are affected by the global market environment, improving inventory security will be a top priority, he added. Related information can be found here.
