China’s Oppo unveils five optical image stabilization sensors for smartphones

Chinese smartphone maker OPPO held an event (Future Imaging Event) and announced optical 5-axis image stabilization technology for smartphones, stepless zoom technology, and a new image sensor at once.

The optical 5-axis image stabilization realizes 5-axis image stabilization by moving both the lens component and the image sensor. A specific operation may be driven by a ball bearing motor when the vibration is small, and driven by an image sensor using a shape memory alloy as well as a lens when the vibration is large. Accordingly, Oppo emphasizes that it is possible to correct the angle three times compared to the existing optical image stabilization.

This optical 5-axis image stabilization is a familiar technology in full-fledged digital cameras. But it’s surprising that it offers similar features in a smaller smartphone enclosure. According to Oppo, the first smartphones to adopt this technology are expected to appear in the first quarter of 2022.

In recent years, periscope enlargement that enables high-magnification optical zoom, which is widely adopted mainly by high-end smartphones. Until now, optical magnification, such as 10x, has been fixed, but Oppo is said to be capable of 85-200mm continuous optical zoom by moving the internal lens to a slide. However, it is not known when the technology will be brought to market.

Oppo also announced its next-generation RGBW sensor. Red, green, blue, and white pixels are added together. This sensor is said to increase the light capture function by 60% and reduce noise by 35% compared to conventional sensors. According to Oppo, this sensor is expected to be installed in its new smartphone in the fourth quarter.

Although many of these characteristic smartphone camera mechanisms have been released, China’s competitor, Vivo, is announcing a gimbal camera, and Xiaomi is announcing a liquid lens and display under camera, so smartphone camera performance is expected to develop rapidly in the future.
