Airbnb announced on August 25 (local time) that it would provide free housing to 20,000 Afghan refugees. Among the quantities registered in the housing support company service, the owner provides housing to refugees according to refugee acceptance and Airbnb provides accommodation expenses.
In August, the Taliban, a radical militant group, took control of Afghanistan as US troops, who had been in charge of security in Afghanistan for several years, withdrew. This is a situation in which citizens are being pushed to borders and airports with the aim of escaping abroad for fear of Taliban rule.
The U.S. government announced on August 23 that 48,000 people had withdrawn from Afghanistan so far, but reports continue that many are still trying to escape as the evacuation period ends on August 31.
In response to this situation, Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky announced on August 25 a plan to provide free housing to 20,000 Afghan refugees worldwide. It is done as part of the charity work of Airbnb.org, a non-profit organization that he founded himself, and CEO Chesky also said that he would donate his own money through this organization.
Refugees will be accommodated in real estate listed on the Airbnb platform, and accommodation costs will be borne by Airbnb. Although it does not disclose specific plans such as where and how many refugees will be accommodated, Airbnb is working with organizations and partner companies that support settlement in third countries to come up with appropriate support measures.
