China’s nuclear fusion reactor succeeded in maintaining 120 million degrees plasma for 101 seconds

The Chinese fusion reactor EAST (Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak) succeeded in maintaining high-temperature plasma at 120 million degrees for 101 seconds and at 160 million degrees for 20 seconds, breaking world records.

Fusion power generation is also called artificial sun, and research is being conducted around the world to solve the energy shortage and switch to new and renewable energy. In December 2020, Korea’s nuclear fusion research device, KSTART, succeeded in maintaining plasma at 100 million degrees for 20 seconds.

According to the report, EAST also succeeded in maintaining 100 million degree plasma for 20 seconds in 2020. After that, 300 researchers upgraded the vacuum system, laser scattering system, microwave system, etc. Then, on May 28, 2021, EAST succeeded in maintaining the plasma at 120 million degrees for 101 seconds, breaking the world record.

According to reports, EAST is being operated with the ultimate goal of providing energy and nuclear fusion using heavy water present in seawater. EAST is estimated to produce energy equivalent to 300 liters of gasoline from deuterium contained in 1 liter of seawater.

The results of EAST research will also be used in ITER, an international fusion test reactor in which 35 countries are participating in the development. Related information can be found here.
