L’arrivée d’un train en gare de La Ciotat (L’arrivée d’un train en gare de La Ciotat) is a film produced by the Lumière brothers in 1895 and released commercially in 1896. However, the video, which is known as one of the oldest in the world, has been upgraded to 4K quality 60-frame video through deep learning of neural networks, attracting attention.
This is a short video of a steam locomotive arriving at a station, and to modern people, it is more like a documentary than a movie. But at the end of the 19th century, when there were few videos, it seemed shocking. There was even an urban legend that the steam locomotive drew near and the audience screamed and ran away. The arrival of the train was filmed on 35mm film with an aspect ratio of 1.33:1 and 16 frames.
The arrival of the train, upgraded to 4K, 60 frames high resolution, changed the aspect ratio to 16:9 and trimmed the top and bottom of the screen. Comparing the scene of a steam locomotive sliding on a platform, it feels like the gravel and the texture of the steam locomotive itself are clearly depicted on the track in 4K quality. It is possible to eliminate the fine noise seen on clothes and passengers getting off the train with luggage, and reduce the roughness of the visible screen, such as female skin.
Upscaling to 4K image quality was achieved by converting 16 frames to 60 frames through an algorithm called Gigapixel AI. In addition, Depth-Aware Video Frame Interpolation was used in consideration of the depth of the subject.
