Vera is Volvo’s unmanned truck concept vehicle. Of course, Vera is still in the concept phase, but the automobile industry’s move toward autonomous driving has been busy over the past few years. Tesla’s truck semi-trucks are almost self-propelled. However, even if autonomous driving is possible in all of these vehicles, the driver’s seat still exists. But Vera is a truck that took off this driver seat.
Volvo expects transportation demand to grow significantly globally over the next decade and sees the need for a transportation system that can leverage existing infrastructure efficiently. From this point of view, it is necessary to use a new concept of self-propelled electric truck that can run on existing roads regardless of day or night by using an electric vehicle which does not emit exhaust gas.
Not only has Volvo developed the Highway Assist function, but it has also begun developing electric trucks. He said he would start selling it next year from early this year. Of course, autonomous trucks such as the Vera may need time to actually come true, but I do not think it would be enough to imagine the future trucking logistics that combine autonomous driving and electricity.
