Softbank Group announced that it will establish a private equity fund, Softbank Vision Fund 2. Like the first Vision Fund, it is aimed at investing in some of the best technology companies in the industry.
The total planned investment amount is worth 108 billion dollars (127 trillion 8,000 won KRW). Among them, Softbank Group is in charge of $38 billion. Other investors besides SoftBank include Apple, Foxconn, Microsoft, Mizuho Bank, Mitsui, Sumitomo Bank, Mitsubishi, UFI, Daiwa Securities, Kazakhstan sovereign wealth fund, Standard Chartered Bank, and Taiwanese investors.
SoftBank Chairman Son Jeong-eui announced plans to create Vision Fund 2 at the time of the company’s settlement in May. He explained that as investors have achieved satisfactory results in the first Vision Fund, most of the investors are also interested in 2, and explained that SoftBank will directly create 100% and involve other investors in it.
At that time, he said, advertising and distribution were the only innovations in the internet industry at the time, and that advertising accounted for only 1% of US GDP, and that the consumer distribution sector was only 6%. Nevertheless, he emphasized that AI will innovate all of the rest, citing that IT companies occupy 7 of the world’s top 10.
He also said that Internet companies’ market capitalization is proportional to Internet traffic, and Internet traffic is not falling from the previous year. As Chairman Son, who visited Korea, shouted AI first, AI second, and AI third, Vision Fund 2 is also expected to actively invest in this field. Related information can be found here .
