Megapack is a new large-scale battery system announced by Tesla.
Tesla has developed and sold large-sized battery products such as PowerWall and PowerPack so far. The power pack is an industrial battery that was introduced in a wind power plant in South Australia in 2017. It has contributed to the establishment of a system that accumulates and distributes power generation energy efficiently. In this area, power failure was a big problem due to the unstable power supply system. However, by storing the power generated by wind power generation with a power pack, it is possible to supply stable power even in times when there is no wind.
Tesla emphasizes that battery storage is an important factor in transforming the grid and transforming it into sustainable energy-driven power generation. The demand for large-scale battery storage projects such as wind power plants is increasing. For this reason, Tesla has developed a new Megapack for a huge power storage facility project that is likely to be developed in the future.
In order to reduce the complexity of the equipment required for large-scale battery storage, Megapack transports equipment such as batteries, inverters, thermal management systems, and control devices all assembled at the factory. Therefore, the only work required locally is installing and connecting the Megapack. Compared to other battery systems, such as improved energy density, it has also achieved significant cost and time savings.
Tesla claims that using Megapack can deploy a 1GWh power plant on 12,000m2 of land in just three months. It is said that it is four times faster than building a fossil fuel power plant of this scale, so Megapack could be helpful in building a new renewable energy plant.
Megapack is also equipped with Tesla’s proprietary monitoring, control, and revenue-generating software. It is also connected to Powerhub, a monitoring and control platform for large facilities or small power grids. It can also be integrated with Autobidder, an energy sales machine learning platform developed by Tesla. As with Tesla vehicles, Megapack can also be expected to benefit from continuous improvement through software updates.
Tesla says the Megapack will function as a sustainable alternative to power generation peaks. Peak power plants, which temporarily operate to compensate for insufficient power when power demand for power plants reaches their peaks, cost millions of dollars per operation, resulting in poor efficiency.
