Indica opens the hybrid engine era from 2022

Two engines are currently being supplied by Honda and Chevrolet for the IndyCar Series, an American auto racing competition. However, it is said that it has decided to hybridize this engine from the 2022 season. With hybridization, Indica’s peak power will rise from 500 to 700 horsepower to over 900 horsepower, reaching a level comparable to that of the F1.

This hybrid system consists of a multi-layer motor, inverter, and power storage device that regenerate energy from the brake system. The power storage device is installed to enable the driver to restart when the engine is stopped, which is currently impossible in Indica. Not only that, but hybrid systems integrate a P2P (Push to Pass), or overtake button, to produce additional outputs that are much more powerful than current P2P systems.

Jay Frye, chairman of Indica, said that it is adding important hybrid technology to engine manufacturers while maintaining the roots of racing as a full-fledged motor sport. Showed.

According to this hybridization decision, the original engine generation replacement will be delayed from 2021 to 2022, but the current chassis manufactured by Lara will also appear in 2022, showing the expectation that new engine manufacturers will participate following Honda and Chevrolet. .

Hybrid power units have been adopted by F1 and Le Mans 24 for a while. Considering that fields using electric power devices such as Formula E and Motor E are also emerging, it may be difficult to say that the hybridization of the Indica series is the introduction of the latest technology. However, as there is a possibility to make racing itself more interesting, the emphasis on hybrids in high-profile competitions is likely to affect car sales in the US.
