Amazon Announces Environmental Measures “Ship 100,000 Electric Cars”

On September 19, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos proposed measures to take measures against climate change, such as buying 100,000 electric cars. Amazon has been deeply criticized for falling behind in countermeasures for environmental issues. Many of the employees also argue that Amazon is emitting large quantities of substances that promote global warming, such as greenhouse gases.

CEO Jeff Bezos’ new commitment to climate change is an attempt to achieve the Paris Agreement, an international framework for global warming measures, 10 years ahead. The content is that by 2030, the proportion of renewable energy such as wind and solar energy will be raised to 100% of the energy use, and greenhouse gases emitted by the entire Amazon by 2040 will be zero. Ahead of this goal, Jeff Bezos announced that by 2021, electric car delivery will start and 100,000 Amazon electric cars will be on the streets by 2024.

Startup Rivian will supply electric vehicles. This place has succeeded in receiving large-scale investments such as $700 million from Amazon in February last year and $500 million from Ford in April this year. As of September, the Rivian lineup reaches 96 km/h within 3 seconds and can drive 650 km continuously with a single charge, a $69,000 EV pickup truck. There is a Rivian R1S, which has been replaced with a three-row seat.

The background of Amazon’s new climate change countermeasures lies in the fact that many of its employees are raising objections to the current status of companies that emit large amounts of greenhouse gases. Amazon’s 15,500 employees have announced strikes from the 20th to coincide with the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit in New York on September 23rd. Thousands are also protesting pollution or supporting the fossil fuel industry in the Amazon.

Amazon Employees For Climate Justice, which has been complaining about environmental issues, said Jeff Bezos’ announcement was a huge victory, but said the promises were insufficient. Related information can be found here .
