Worldwide smartphone shipments increase in 2 years

Smartphone shipments have been stagnating over the past few years. However, according to a report by market research firm Canalys, global smartphone shipments in the third quarter of 2019 turned to an increase in two years, up 1% year-on-year. The total number of shipments is 352.4 million.

Samsung Electronics and Huawei were driving the market. Samsung Electronics’ shipments were 78.9 million units, an increase of 11% compared to the same period last year, and Huawei’s 66.8 million units, an increase of 29%. Although Huawei continues to receive US sanctions, it seems that in the Chinese market, the number of users who purchase Huawei handsets is increasing in response to pressure from the US and others. Perhaps that is why, in the Chinese market, shipments in the third quarter recorded 41.5 million units, up 66% from the same period last year. It has gained a market share of 42.5%. At the end of last October, Huawei also announced that its global shipments exceeded 200 million units.

Meanwhile, in the case of Apple, the number of units shipped in the global market was 3.4 million units, down 7% from the same period last year, to 43.5 million units. This can be said to be a significant impact of the reduction of 2 million units in the Chinese market.

However, as Apple releases new handsets every September, the downturn in shipments in the third quarter can be quickly recovered. Considering that the second quarter fell 13% compared to the same period last year, it can be said that the situation in the third quarter improved further.
