Air Protein is a protein produced from carbon dioxide in the air, developed by Kiverdi, a startup located in California, USA.
Air Protein says the idea of synthesizing proteins from air was originally from NASA. In the 1960s, NASA came up with the concept of converting the carbon dioxide from water or astronauts into hydrogen oxidizing bacteria to convert them into nutrients necessary for humans, focusing on the single-celled hydrogen oxidizing bacteria that can metabolize carbon dioxide.
Inspired by NASA, Keybirdy conducted research on hydrogen oxidizing bacteria and discovered hydrogen oxidizing bacteria that can efficiently produce essential amino acids from carbon dioxide. Air protein made using this hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria contains all nine essential amino acids, has an amino acid level close to that of animal protein, and contains twice as many amino acids. Air protein also contains vitamin B12, niacin, and thiamine, which are difficult to consume in vegetarian diets. Because it is produced in the air, genetically modified crops, pesticides, herbicides, hormones or antibiotics are not used.
The appearance of Air Protein is a light brown powder. According to Keybirdy, air protein is recommended to be mixed with beverages or mixed with other ingredients and eaten with artificial meat.
Keybirdy discusses environmental issues such as deforestation and drought, and stresses the importance of food production methods that can reduce dependence on land and water resources. The air protein production process is similar to fermentation such as beer or yogurt, and ends in hours regardless of weather or season. It also explains that there is an advantage in that land is not needed over livestock and agriculture. Related information can be found here .
