Qualcomm signed a six-year semiconductor supply contract with Apple and signed a contract with Apple for a six-year semiconductor supply, while reconciling in April after ending a lawsuit about payment of license fees. Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon said the first important step mentioned in the deal is to try to bring 5G-capable iPhones as quickly as possible.
This remark was made during the Snapdragon Tech Summit in Hawaii. He said that the top priority in the relationship with Apple is to launch an iPhone for 5G as soon as possible, and that it takes precedence over anything else.
In many ways, it has already been reported that the 2020 iPhone 12 series will be equipped with the Qualcomm 5G modem chip Snapdragon X55. The iPhone 12 release is expected to be next fall, so there is still about a year left. However, according to Amon, Apple’s development process is slowing down considerably. As a result of the delay in reconciliation with Qualcomm, it is admitted that there is no expectation in the RF front end, so it cannot be implemented.
The RF front end is a collection of antennas, signal tuners and power amplifiers. In the 5G era, it plays an important role in how to adjust and compress signals. Qualcomm recommends its RF front end for the best transmission and reception, but it seems to be late for the iPhone 12.
Mr. Amon emphasized that Qualcomm reconciled later than desired and began supplying chips, which caused delays.
