Qualcomm joins hands with Niantic, AR Glass coming

Qualcomm and Niantic announced that they will build a multi-year cooperation system for AR software and hardware development. Accordingly, both companies plan to develop AR glass reference hardware, software for it, and cloud components in the future.

Snapdragon XR2, a virtual space technology platform that supports 5G, announced by Qualcomm, consists of 7 cameras that support 8K resolution and 360-degree video playback, and a system that can build AR glasses equipped with it.

This collaboration is to develop an AR glass reference design using the Snapdragon XR2 and to implement the RealWorld platform, an AR technology used for Pokemon Go. In other words, these applications will be able to easily support AR functions in AR Glass equipped with Snapdragon XR2. In addition, AR Glass is not as expensive as the Holo Lens and Magic Leaf that have been released so far, but aims to commercialize at an affordable price that anyone can purchase.

In addition, Phil Keslin, CTO of Niantic, said that if Snapdragon XR2 becomes available during the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit, it will be available to all developers of the 2020 Niantic Creator Program. In other words, general developers will be able to directly develop location information and AR apps using the Niantic AR platform. Related information can be found here .
