PC shipments in 2019↑ “Part of the end of support for Windows 7”

IDC, a market research firm, released survey data on PC shipments in the fourth quarter of 2019. According to this, PC shipments in the fourth quarter were 71.8 million units, an increase of 4.8% year-on-year.

According to IDC research, PC shipments in the fourth quarter of 2019 were the highest in four years since the fourth quarter of 2015 in terms of single-quarter PC shipments. In addition, in 2019, PC shipments increased 2.7% year-on-year, and annual PC shipments increased year-on-year for the first time since the 1.7% increase in 2011.

In the third quarter of 2019, PC shipments are increasing compared to the previous year, and it is a marked year that PC demand still remains throughout the year. IDC said that the PC market will continue to have problems, but it is a year that clearly showed that the demand for PCs still remains despite the rapidly increasing demand for new form factors and mobile computing in 2019.

Looking at the top five PC shipments in the fourth quarter of 2019 and the shipments of these companies, Lenovo shipped the most PCs with 1,7832,000 units and 24.8% market share. HP accounted for 17.1 million units and 23.9%, followed by Dell at 1,2463,000 units, followed by 17.4%. All of these top three companies increased their shipments by more than 5% compared to the same period last year.

On the other hand, Apple, the fourth-largest player, has 4721,000 units, with a market share of 6.6%. Compared to the previous year, shipments decreased by 5.3%, with the contrast between the top three companies. IDC says that Apple’s Mac shipments declined year-on-year. In addition, in the PC market as a whole, PC shipments in the fourth quarter of 2019 were 73.78 million units, an increase of 4.8% from the same period last year.

PC shipments in 2019 were 26.69 million units, an increase of 2.7% from the previous year. In addition, it is analyzed that the demand for PCs in 2019 was driven by the end of support for Windows 7 in January 2020, and many companies switched to PCs with Windows 10.

Like IDC, another market research firm Gartner also discloses PC shipment data. According to Gartner, PC shipments in the fourth quarter of 2019 were 70.6 million units, an increase of 2.3% from the same period last year.

Gartner also revealed that the increase in PC shipments in the fourth quarter of 2019 was largely attributed to the end of Windows 7 support in January 2020. Many companies located in China, Eurasia and the emerging Asia-Pacific region still have not upgraded to Windows 10 with their PC operating system, so PC shipments are predicted to continue to increase even after Windows 7 support ends in January 2020.

Gartner said that there was a shortage of Intel CPUs from mid-2019 until now, and it is believed that the number of PC shipments of Lenovo, HP, and Dell, the top three PC shipments, was greatly affected. He pointed out that if there was no shortage of Intel CPUs, more PCs could be shipped.
