Toyota also jumps into the flying car market

Toyota announced on January 15 (local time) that it will cooperate with Joby Aviation, the developer of eVTOL, an electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft capable of vertical takeoff and landing like a helicopter. To do this, Toyota is investing $394 million in Jovi.

Not only that, Toyota also participates in design, materials, and technology development, and shares the know-how of its own production method, the Toyota Productivity System (TPS), with Jovi. According to Toyota, eVTOL development and manufacturing technology has a lot in common with next-generation eco-friendly vehicle technology in various fields such as electrification and new materials.

Toyota is also unveiling plans for mass production of eVTOL in the future, and explained that its goal is to create products that meet stringent cost standards as well as quality and stability.

During CES 2020 held in Las Vegas in the U.S. in early January, Hyundai Motor Group announced the S-A1, a concept flying car model that is under development in cooperation with Uber. With Toyota’s participation, the movement toward realization of new means of transportation is accelerating. Related information can be found here .
