Boston Dynamics has released the spot development kit, a quadruped walking robot platform, as open source. The company also announced that it will hold its first user conference, Actuate, in Boston on May 12-13.
Boston Dynamics is a company that has become famous for its four-legged walking robot BigDog. It was acquired by Google X, a division of Google’s research, but was sold because it wasn’t profitable after Android creator Andy Rubin left the company, and it is now under Softbank.
Spot is a mass-produced model that lightweighted and electrified a quadruped walking robot. By adding various sensors, additional parts, and payload, it is establishing itself as a robot platform that can be used in various environments from industrial to entertainment. Spot released the development SDK, which had been seen by some early adopter program participants, on GitHub so that anyone can access it. Of course, to use this software, you’ll need to rent or buy Spot from Boston Dynamics.
As previously stated, the company also revealed the schedule of hosting the first user conference. The first event is limited to early adopter program subscribers or selected invitees among applicants. Boston Dynamics plans to hold annual conferences, and it is said that it is aiming for an open event with a lower threshold. Related information can be found here .
