NASA has announced that it has commissioned Axiom Space to design and develop a habitable commercial module to connect to the International Space Station.
NASA has been pursuing plans to commercialize the ISS and use it as a support site for private space projects. Commercially available module connections are also part of this scheme. It was noticed which company will be in charge of module design and development, but Axiomspace, located in Houston, took over.
Axiomspace is a company founded in 2016 by Michael T. SUFFREDINI, who served as ISS program manager at NASA. In addition to Michael Surfradini, many NASA employees are employed, providing personal space travel programs and supporting space development.
According to Axiomspace, the commercial module to be connected consists of three modules of the Earth Observatory in residential, research and production facilities. It aims to connect to the ISS by 2024, and after the ISS connection, private researchers will conduct experiments or space travelers will stay.
ISS is scheduled to complete operation in 2025, but after the end of operation, the module will be separated from the ISS body to connect the power platform, and the space station Axiom Station managed by Axiomspace will be built. In the future, civilian space stations based on these residential modules may appear one after another. Related information can be found here .
