GM “Detroit plant changes to electric vehicle only”

General Motors announced that it will invest $2.2 billion in the Hamtrak plant in Detroit, USA to convert it into its first electric vehicle plant.

Confucius, which is dedicated to electric vehicles, plans to produce electric pickup trucks and SUVs, but the specific lineup is not clear. The first model will be an electric pickup truck named after GMC Hammer. Production begins in late 2021, and soon the cruise Origin, an unmanned autonomous vehicle for vehicle sharing, will also enter production.

Accordingly, the Hamtrak plant currently ends production of the Chevrolet Impala and Cadillac CT6 until February, and is undergoing renovation from March. The plant has 900 employees, but it is possible to move to another production base during the 18-month maintenance period. In addition, after remodeling for electric vehicles, the Hamtrak plant will be increased to 2,200 and the salary will increase.

Job creation due to the conversion of the electric vehicle plant, construction of the world’s largest electric vehicle battery production plant announced last year, and the start of electric vehicle production at the Oregon plant in Michigan, in fact, is not enough to cover the 14,000 cuts announced by GM in 2018. But GM’s move shows that, in the future, as the popularity and demand for electric vehicles increase and production increases, at least there is a possibility that more jobs will be revived.
